Engel, who founded the firm in 1981, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh (B.A., 1969) and Boston University School of Law (1973). He practices in the area of employment law, divorce and family law, personal injury, estate and will contests, real estate and alternative dispute resolution. Mr. Engel has represented hundreds of clients in divorce proceedings, with his clients including professional athletes, white collar professionals, businessmen and homemakers in divorces ranging from amicable separations to complicated international disputes and cases involving complex divisions of family businesses. Mr. Engel is counsel to a number of substantial closely-held businesses, providing many of the functions of an in-house counsel. He has been actively engaged as a mediator and arbitrator for 13 years, having resolved approximately 500 cases involving personal injury, medical malpractice, life insurance coverage and employment issues. He has participated in alternative dispute resolution education programs sponsored by the Massachusetts Bar Association and was selected as one of twenty arbitrators to decide individual cases arising from a class action law suit against John Hancock Life Insurance Company. Mr. Engel has tried numerous cases in virtually every level of court, state and federal, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He has been admitted to handle out-of-state cases in several jurisdictions, including New York, Maryland, Virginia and Rhode Island.
